Billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili announced that the opening event was supposed to be also a demonstration of power on his side, and so it was. To show their support, thousands of people took part in the rally at Freedom Square in Tbilisi. The former head of Georgian Parliament, Nino Burjanadze, also made an appearance during the gathering, the biggest demonstration of opposition since 2009.
The date of the campaign inauguration was scheduled 2 months ago. The official part did not last long and included singing the national anthem and a speech of Ivanishvili. “Parliamentary election this fall is a matter of life and death for our country”, he said. Besides the usual criticism towards the incumbent president, the billionaire spoke about issues that everybody was interested in: reforming education, health insurance system, pension system, agricultural development and integration with the EU and NATO. The 20-minute long speech was followed by several pop songs while followers peacefully dispersed without incidents.
The promoting campaign of the billionaire goes on – Ivanishvili said that he would do everything to meet with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her visit in the Caucasus between 4 and 7 June this year.
