Georgia: Meeting at the Border
The meeting, held on 24 January in Dvani, located on the border separating Georgia and breakaway republic called South Ossetia, was the first of this year’s series of events focused on conflict prevention in the disputed zone. Sadly, this time no agreement regarding exchange of prisoners was reached.

Another round of “border” talks took place on 24 January. Organization of the meeting was easier thanks to cooperation with local sections of European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) and OSCE. The participants were debating on detained persons and control of the border zone separating both territories. Other subjects on the agenda were missing persons in South Ossetia and safety measures regarding mines in the close proximity of the border.
In comparison to the previous one, held on 21 December 2011, when an agreement on detainees was reached, the only result of this meeting was scheduling the date of the next one – 21 February. At the end of last year, 13 citizens of South Ossetia were exchanged for 15 Georgians. In last year’s November, relatives of the prisoners had met with representatives of the EU monitoring mission.
