Georgia: 16.08.2011 ‘Borjomi’ Could Return To The Russian Market

The Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision of Russia is ready to lift a ban on importing foodstuffs from Georgia, introduced in 2006. Removing the trade restrictions is debated within the context of Russia joining WTO.

News service Interfax informed that Russia is again considering allowing import of Georgian water Borjomi. Head of the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor) Gennadiy Onishchenko implied that Georgian wines and mineral waters are to be able to return to the Russian market under a condition – they would undergo all necessary procedures which guarantee the products are safe.

The leader of ‘Free Georgia’ party Kakha Kukava believes that in order to resume import of Borjomi mineral water at least two months are needed. In his opinion, the next stage would be renewing import of other products, a.o. wine, vodka, tea and citrus fruits. However, other Russian sources claim that, according to an interview given by Nica Cholokashvili, IDS Borjomi spokesman, Georgian side would not apply to Rosselkhoznadzor for resuming delivery of Borjomi water to Russia.

Information: on May 7, 2006, the director of Rosselkhoznadzor banned importing Georgian mineral water Borjomi to Russia. The supposed cause of such decision was an inspection which disclosed that the bottles for mineral water do not meet Russian quality and safety standards. Embargo placed on the whole sector of Georgian foodstuffs industry resulted in country’s rapid decrease of export to Russia. As a consequence of this decision, Georgian economy lost about USD 35 – 40 million.

Russia took steps in order to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2011. The last country which – using veto – is blocking its participation is Georgia.
